How To Paint The Rock Faces Of A Model Railroad

Here’s a great how to video that shows you how to paint the rock faces of your model railroad using simple acrylic paints.

Ross demonstrates the technique to spraying thinned acrylic paints to create very realistic looking rock faces on hills and mountains.

The process is easy and I hope it inspires you to try it on your train layout.

Hi everyone, Jim here. If your looking for spray bottles I have found that you might just have them at home. I use old empty window cleaner, carpet spot removers and even bug sprayers. You just clean them out really well and there ya go. I it is a rather large area you are doing, I have gone to the DIY and picked up a lawn sprayer. The bottle looks too big but they do carry smaller ones. Well, all for now, just remember, anything that comes to be trash to one person is a Train Modelers Gold. lol.

  3. Great work Ross, I will try this myself. Have you ever tried to color your hydrocal powder or adding color to your Hydrocal solution?

    • Hi Rene, I’ve just discovered my video is linked to this page. I use casting plaster and have never wanted to add colour to the mix because the colour would be too uniform as the base colour, it’s the variation that is important to me. Thanks for your comment.

  4. hi i was just wondering how or what you use to get the basic shape of the rock face

  5. Great demo – very helpful.
As a novice, I thought doing this stuff was way beyond me, but now I’m looking forward to giving it a try.
    Thanks so much.

That is, no doubt, of the most one of the most enlightening instructional videos I’ve seen yet. I love the idea of using the spray bottles. I had always thought everyone was using an airbrush. Nice surprise. Keep up the good work Ross.
